A laugh Happy New Year!

Friendster photos tell a lot...

By the way, as a kind of circle completion, or a sign of my laziness in updating my blog, a very wonderful brother-in-law gave me the DVDs of Kiki's Delivery Service (see last post months ago...) and Princess Mononoke for Christmas.

In the past week we watched both Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away. Miyazaki has the vibe of young girls going on. Both films were excellent, but I think I am slightly partial to the young witch coming of age story in Kiki's D.S., although I thought Phil Hartman's voice was a little too strong for Jiji. I am also obsessed with Studio Ghibli's logo. Spirited Away won the Academy Award for animated film this year, rightfully so. I was a little scared by some of the spirits, but I am now obsessed with getting a dragon! Tonight we watch Princess Mononoke, which I have already seen, but Mistar hasn't. Oh, My Neighbor Totoro, which I saw years ago, is also great!

Saw Fubar by myself, funny mostly, sometimes causing flashbacks to the very early 80's for me and my brief foray into metal land... Eye of the Tiger cause severe distress to anyone else? That song is what made me realize I had to continue on the punk/new wave path.

Last night we also watched Auto Focus the biographical film about Bob Crane from the television series Hogan's Heroes. The sets, make-up, and cinematography were all perfect. All of the actors were excellent.

Adaptation
After viewing Adaptation last weekend (yes, very late on the trends,) I am still deciding whether it was a great movie, or merely a good movie. Watching a film that is about the making of a script for a film, doesn't work for the 'awe and wonder' factor. A protagonist that is a middle aged, chubby, balding, insecure, sweaty mess doesn't particularly get you swept up in the action and feeling sympathetic for the character. But... it is brilliantly written and acted. It is nice to see Meryl Streep having fun, and Chris Cooper is excellent. I was impressed by Nicolas Cage's performance, allowing himself to act again, after his string of poorly selected romantic comedies and action movies (except for Face/Off, which I loved.)

We did see Bowling For Columbine a couple weeks ago. Decent enough. I like Micheal Moore, but I still find some problems with his staging of situations for dramatic effect, as some have researched. Good message overall though.

I saw the movie Far From Heaven on Wednesday. I am still not sure of my final opinion on the film. I love Todd Haynes, how could I not, the man made Velvet Goldmine! I also loved Safe, Poison, and his Karen Carpenter Story, but I think his talent as a filmmaker is what left me undecided on Far From Heaven. He did such an amazingly brilliant tribute to Douglas Sirk and films from the fifties, the issues I have with these films is what tainted my feelings for Far From Heaven. The children that are rarely seen or heard, except for their pleas of "Pop, pop, want to see what I did in school today?" Yes, the children call Dennis Quaid 'Pop' and are frequently left alone at home or in the car, even at their apparent ages of 8 and 10. Something that wouldn't be questioned in the fifties. The sweeping score, inhabiting the term fully, was beautiful. The titles, lifted directly from a film from the fifties I think. And what left me the most on the fence, the dialog. At some times stilted, other times 'issue oriented' expository, faithful to the period. Ah, OK, it was perfectly executed, but I like my whiz-bang movies of today.
